For those of you who have never heard of FUD, it stands for “Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt” and has long been a tool used to sell things or coerce people into making a decision.

In my case, the FUD factor is more about the upcoming launch of my debut novel, Mik Murdoch, Boy Superhero. Now that the book is done and totally out of my hands, those common doubts are surfacing: will people enjoy the story? will they even know the book exists? will it sell?

I know of good, well-known authors who have done everything in their power to spread the word only to have their book fall flat sales-wise. It wasn’t a fault of the book, the cover or anything else I’ve been able to pinpoint. It simply didn’t sell. Will mine be any different?

I’m trying not to lose any sleep over it. After all, there really is only so much I can do without driving people away. All I can do is gently push it in the right direction and hope for the best. That means continuing to offer up Advanced Reader Copies in exchange for reviews (hopefully positive) and offer myself up for interviews.

I am kicking the marketing and promotion machine into high gear. Or, at least, I’m trying to. This part of the process is all new to me and it is a challenge to know what to do and when and where.

So, I’ve been blogging and tweeting about Mik Murdoch, but it seemed to me that, since I have my own podcast about getting published, I should talk more about the book here. Yes, I know what you are thinking: Mike has already talked about the book on several episodes.

What I haven’t done is have someone else ask me the kinds of questions I normally ask my guests and so, the idea for this episode was born. I asked one of my writing partners, JR Murdock if he would mind interviewing me for the show. I didn’t give him any questions, but asked him to put a list of things he would like me to talk about.

We sat down a few nights later and JR interviewed me for Get Published. It was sort of surreal, but it was a lot of fun. I hope you don’t mind this little bit of self-promotion while I talk about my own experiences with getting a book published thus far.
