Thanks Huushiita. Good luck with your two projects. They both sound interesting (and maybe a little odd too) ;)

Keep me posted on how you are doing with them.

This makes me very happy for you! :) Very happy indeed.

The projects I'm currently working on? I actually got hit by a really interesting idea a week ago. It nearly knocked me out of my chair, tbh. lol It's set in the Star Wars Universe. It's mostly an exercise on focusing heavily on 'show and don't tell'. Also, I have never written in the Science-Fiction genre so it's good for me in that regards, too.

There's also another project I'm working on to help raise money to save the oceans. It's a ... um.... well tbh a tentacle porn anthology. O.o Talk about pushing the boundries on this one, eh? lol

I haven't dug as deeply as I should, yet, but my understanding is, none of the material can be copies in any way. You, the author, have sole right to the work and can pull it off the site any time you wish. You can still sell it and submit to publishers. There are no obligations to the site that prevent that.

Does that answer your question?

That's an awesome line up for 2012. I'm excited for you. I've chatted with J.R. Murdock on Skype and he's going to be a busy boy too, along with Scott Roche. I'm planning to self publish and podcast my first full novel, two novellas, and write two more novels. I have two novels in the can from NaNoWriMo I was planning on revising but we'll see if I get to those. They were my first and third novel and will need a lot of revision. Here's to a busy and productive 2012!

I saw John Mierau post something about Wattpad a couple months back. When I saw that they had mobile apps, and that the text of my story couldn't be copied and that people could comment on each chapter posted I realized it would be the best platform to beta readers. I've been posting the novel I'm going to self publish and podcast up there chapter by chapter after revising and once I'm done I'm going to ask all the people on my beta reader list to go over there and start reading and giving me feedback. That said, someone on the site stumbled upon my book and read all 17 chapters I currently have posted. They left me great feedback and on the last chapter said the book has grown on them and they hope I finish it. I have also put several short stories on there, all the ones you can find for free on Smashwords.com because they're under 5K words. I look forward to seeing what you think of the site. There are also a lot of users in the clubs that offer to critique and edit your work, and it's free. I think the site is definitely worth looking into my friend, if for networking, getting your work in front of a lot of eyes, and as a beta reading resource are just a few. Nice post. Thanks Michell.

I haven't done as much networking as you have, I know, but I know it does work. Hanging around writers on G+ and the NaNo site, I've gotten to known some fantastic people. :)

Also, did you mean to mention facebook twice. :) I was just curious.

You make a very good point that we should have talked to. Part of why I overlooked that aspect is, JR and I knew each other for quite a while before we ever agreed to work together. We knew each other pretty well and respected each other's work. In our early talks we both brought up the things that might impact the project and knew where the roadblock might come from. That definitely helped and, when things did come up, we let the other know.

There has definitely been give and take during the project including editorially. However, we have both taken a hand in the editing and when we disagree, we meet to discuss.

I think the absolute key here is keeping the channels of communication open.

Thanks for the comment.

I enjoyed this episode on collaboration. One thing that you did not talk about was compatibility. Collaboration usually requires both sides giving up some control of the editing process, and some otherwise great writers might be stressful to work with for this reason. I think it helps if both writers are close in skill and motivation to produce, and if they have a lot of respect for each other.

You are absolutely correct, James. When you are doing the networking you typically find like-minded people who are also reaching out just like you. Those connections are what makes the opportunities come to life. Thanks for your comment. :)

One of the best aspects of networking as you've addressed it here is the fact that it's not just a one-way street. Each of the individuals you are working with were out there networking just like you. A connection was made and good things are coming of it. Just remember, at that next con or NaNo write-in, there may be someone with an idea that it takes both of you to bring to life. Many parts of the whole and all that. Great blog post.

[...] “As I talked about last episode, I went to World Fantasy Convention hoping to line up some guests for the show. The first, with Michael Stackpole was a great conversation but there was a lot of background noise that I wasn’t able to clean up. My second interview also suffers from background noise, this time from people in the area. I kept trying to find different and better places to do the interviews but everywhere I went there were people. Today’s interview is with Jeremy Lassen, Editor-in-Chief at Nightshade books. I met Jeremy once before and I was very happy to get some of his time for the interview.” Listen here. [...]

I don't mind at all. In fact, I'm beginning to think I need to have someone interview me for the show so I can answer your questions properly. ;)

The biggest lesson I've learned (up to this point any way) is to ensure that my character talks using language of the right age. In this particular book, he is nine-years-old and, while I try to portray him as smart, he sometimes speaks like too much of an adult. I've had to young it down a little.

I'm starting to recognize lazy scenes. Whenever the resolution happens in a single iteration or my scene cuts are too sudden without any supporting information, I know I'm going too fast. I'm still revising this one (the heat has been turned up - a few interesting developments have meant I need to get the manuscript ready that much sooner) so I can't quite answer your last question yet. I don't think I will be editing prior to writing new though. I've tried that in the past and it has only meant a VERY long, drawn out writing process for me. Better for me to get the words down first, and then edit them.

Interesting. I have some follow-up questions, if you don't mind. You could just elaborate on Get Published (I'll listen). Are there some grammar, tone, style, lessons that you learned which you could share? When you talk about lazy scenes, I'm wondering if there is a way to help people identify lazy scenes while they're writing (not just if they wrote something telling like "And then he kicked all there butts and moved on"). What were the tell tale signs of your lazy scenes, and do you catch yourself now before they are finished? Do you have a new method, like editing the chapter prior to moving forward?

Great questions, Tim. I would say my editing process was more on the actual physical aspects of the story (grammer, tone, tense, etc.) than on the actual plot elements, how the characters behaved and so on. Essentially, the developmental things that Robert Runte' spoke about in episode 65.

I think the biggest thing pointed out to me was that I get lazy sometimes. I want to get a piece of the story finished quickly so I rush it too much. I suspected it and, where they have pointed it out, it immediately became obvious.

I haven't yet come across anything I want to fight over. There was one scene that Robert had some hard questions about, but I answered them and we moved forward. I will definitely have to use your question(s) on Get Published.

What was your editing process prior to getting Mik Murdock accepted by Three Rivers? Are there areas of your style that they've shown you need fixing? Any tough advice that you've struggled with taking, maybe relating to stylistic choices? Are you taking a stand on any points/style preferences, or is it pretty much accepting their advice and going with it?

This question grew as I wrote it out. Maybe you could answer at the beginning of one of your shows.

I had this same problem with the novel I'm publishing on podiobooks, the Horde. My hero does some pretty icky stuff and I hadn't given the sidekick enough of a reason to believe in the hero and stay by his side. I've yet to see a book that would be hurt by more development and space given to tightening/developing character bonds.

The "cowboy ending" happens all the time in my stories. In some manner it resembles the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Harrison Ford's character is confronted by the sword-yielding Arab warrior in the marketplace and just shoots him. In the movie, greatly humorous because of the unexpected profanity from the 'hero' and his extremely unheroic, pragmatic action. It has its place.

Slightly more introspective, neither my reader nor I, the author, for that matter, has the 'right' to expose our protagonist, or anyone else for that matter, to a detailed character examination and personality analysis without the character's 'permission', just like in real life. This sounds extremely stupid having just written it, but my characters expose themselves by their words and actions at 'their' discretion. After all, I just provide the playing field and the moving pen: the characters are perfectly capable of revealing themselves as they wish.

I believe stories are never finished, just abandoned...I find myself guilty of many "cowboy endings". Love that phrase! I find that I'll wait awhile and then go back and edit the crap out of it before abandoning it again, repeating cycle many times.

I think the role of the editor is one that is poorly understood. I know, I certainly had questions which is why it was so valuable talking to Robert. I think the various types of editing all have their place, but for the new writer, the Developmental Editor is a clear win.

Thanks for the opportunity to listen to this kind of interview. The clear difference betrween grammatical editing and development editing was never clear to me before. given the access Mr. Runte is offering and the modest intro pricing I shall likely send him something to chew on.

I absolutely agree. Editors may start to take the front seat in the new world. We will likely see agents doing more and more of it too.

Editing may just get some of the attention it deserves in the new era. :-) And unlike writing coaches and well meaning friends who stop short of seeing you to the final manuscript, a professional editor has getting the thing DONE front and centre as the goal.

You want to be done the revisions by end of Sept? I gave you 400 changes! That's supposed to keep you busy until at least early November, which is the earliest point at which I could possibly work your manuscript back into my schedule. The last guy took 8 months to respond to my edits. Much more reasonable!

Absolutely right. The only way to overcome the self-publishing stigma is to put out good quality books. That means good covers and, even more importantly, great editing.

Great interview! I must admit that I have rarely heard audio interviews of editors. With the shifts in book publishing, this is an important area.

In particular for those who self publish (for $), finding good editors and good book cover artists/designers are crucial.

This particular book is coming out via Five Rivers Publishing, however, the kinds of edits I have here can be acquired from any developmental editor. I do have a book coming out via self-publish this year but that is another story. :)

Champaign and roses, Michell. My dream was to get my "saga" told, whole, beginning to end, as planned. I'll be there in 2013. Edge has told me all titles will be digital in 2012, as well. So I'm counting that a check mark come 2013.

Finding a person or group to give honest, if not brutal, reality checks on writing is so rare and crucial to improving skills. While new authors need encouragement, I find I want constructive criticisms much more.
ps. I have a short story in the recently released Big Book of Bizarro. A zombie erotica short story written while I wait for the next rejection letter (or no response as is becoming more common) for my last novel. On to the next project.

Bonjour Lucie,

Thank you so much for your comment and for giving GalaxyBillies a chance. I knew very well going in that it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. I expected to get some poor reviews. Where I have a problem is when the review is, as you said, venom-spewing. I always appreciate constructive criticism, but flaming something doesn't help anyone (well, I suppose it might make the flamer feel better about themselves). Please let me know how far you were able to go and what your thoughts are on the story. I know it has some warts, but I hope to fix most of them when I begin preparing it for publication.

Thank you again,

-Mike

Where I have a problem is when the review is, as you said, venom-spewing. I always appreciate constructive criticism, but flaming something doesn’t help anyone (well, I suppose it might make the flamer feel better about themselves). Please let me know how far you were able to go and what your thoughts are on the story. I know it has some warts, but I hope to fix most of them when I begin preparing it for publication.

Thank you again,

-Mike

Hi Mike. I am just beginning listening to GalaxyBillies.

I usually gives 5 minutes to a new podcast : there are so much to listen too ! But so far you have passed the 5 minutes test. ;) (make that 10 at the end of my comment writing, still listening ;) good sign)

I know feedback is a bitch to get. And sometimes it is bad feedback. I realize some great podcasters and writers get bad feedback for petty reasons as : I liked the story but it did not end like I would have liked...

Ask Nathan Lowell, (you know, Parsec award winner and all) how many 1 star ratings he got for Owner's Share because people didn't want it to end that way...

Or Abbie Hilton, just because her Cowry Catchers goes ways no one had gone before...

So ratings are very subjective.,, and sometimes written by people who have too much time on their hands and so much amounts of venom they have to spat in a day.

I still can't say that's what is happening to your story. I am not there yet. One thing I can promise is give it a fair try and a fair rating. :)

I always tell everybody, that online life is all fun and dandy, and their are commitments that we do need to keep. But, in reality, you need to live your real life, as that is most important. I've had to regretfully ban myself from online time for weeks at a time, in order to regain focus. So, if you miss a deadline or two ... I will not be standing there glaring daggers at you. I understand. <3 I'm sure others will as well.

You can never tell what will take precedence over your writing. The family should always be more important so I think you've got your priorities right. Still, it makes getting the words down that much more difficult, doesn't it?

You are on the right track. Find those little nuggets of time and carve them out for your writing. You will be amazed at how much you get done, especially since you will probably be thinking about the story between writing sessions. You may even find yourself more productive than before because you have had that extra time to mentally work through the story.

That's awesome, Dan! It may not feel like much when you're used to writing much more every day, but those little bits of progress add up in a hurry. I hadn't been making much progress on my work until I started using my iPad during my commute. Now it feels like everything is on track again.

This is a tough one. I haven't been writing much ever since our third child came into the world. With 3 kids 3 years old and under live is a bit full. I have only been able to find about a half hour a week to write, so I have started writing on my lunch breaks, and also recording into my phone. We'll see how much I can get done in a week. I'm excited.

I don't. :) I'm in the same boat you are Mike. I have started 4 short stories within the last couple months, and have yet to finish them. I'm also trying to rewrite a novel so I can get it to beta redears and then podcast it by 11/11/11. I realized that if I'm really going to do that then something needs to change. I've been inspired by your iPad wordcount posts. Now I'm taking a half hour lunch break everyday instead of working through lunch. I have with my my AlphaSmart Neo (a keyboard with a small display for writing) and I go into a small lobby area that no one is ever in and it's quiet and I write. I've only done it once for 19 minutes so far, but that yeilded 500+ words, so I'm excited to see how many I can get in a full half hour. Right now, any progress is exciting to me. Ever since our third child was born, writing has been about a half hour a week if I'm lucky, so this new plan should give me much better results and not cut into family time. Best of luck with all your stories, I can't wait to read them!

I was trying to figure out the best place to but a review on your site. I think this is as good a place as any.

Every since I listened to his podcast Galaxy Billies, Mike Plested has been after me to write a review for it. It is not that I didn’t want to write a review, or that I didn’t like the podast or anything like that, the truth is that I hadn’t written a review because I stink at writing reviews. Not only am I not good a writing reviews, I know it and so I procrastinate about it. Well enough procrastinating. I have fired up the 486 Beowulf cluster and there are no excuses any more. Here is my review of Galaxy Billies, WARNING THERE WILL BE SPOILERS

Galaxy Billies by Mike Plested is a wonderful romp through the, well um galaxy with the most unlikely galaxy explorers. The story is told in the style of an old radio drama, and because of that each episode feels new and fresh. The story has a great flow as the group of backwoods folk stumble into and out of trouble each week. What kind of trouble could six folks from the back woods of the Application mountains get into? Well lets just say that before it is all over the two largest intergalatic fleets of war ships and brown postal vans come head to head, in order to get it resolved. Along the way every possible sci/fi trope is is used abused and otherwise burned and pillaged in the name of a great story or cheap laugh.
Mike Plested is nothing if not a professional, and the story telling and audio quality of this production proves that. While I am not a huge fan of modulating one voice for many characters I think Mike pulls this off well. The story telling style is very reminiscent of the original Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and this story definitely benefits from that.

You are absolutely correct. Continuing to write and trying to move forward is the most important thing, especially when there are many demands on your time.

I try to write every day, but I only succeed about half the time. I console myself with the knowledge that I'm still writing which is the important thing. Also, I know that summer is the hardest time of year for me to write (bar December - Nanowrimo tends to burn me out for about a month afterwards).

I try not to stress about missed writing days. Sometimes there just isn't enough hours in the day. If I can't write, I plot. Usually there are a few moments within the busiest days to think about what I will write next. A missed day only makes me what to write more. Besides, writing is a long-term activity. Results are achieved in the long haul not in one day, one week, or even one month, sometimes not even a year.

This is a good article. Every author who "has done it" can nod our head. Traditional publishers are even slower. It would have taken your book two years to be out for sale (I haven't been here but I have researched. The publisher I used is a great publisher that has everything done in one place so I didn't have to set deadlines (I needed more help), but this is great advice for people who go the total DIY approach. Just wait, marketing is the hardest part of the whole thing!

Negative comments suck but are apart of the game. Sometimes you can learn from them, other times they are just one person's opinion. I cringed when I read a reviewer comment that my story was painful to read. I try to learn something from all reviews and just keep moving forward. There's no point in getting into a discussion about someone's opinion.

So true. And it never fails, does it. You think you have all the flaws worked out, and then within five minutes you find a misspelled word/wrong word/missing or wrong punctuation.

Still, you can only do what you can do.

I've always had trouble with the perseverance needed to 'get it right.' But few things irritate me as much as seeing typos in my first published novel. There are always more things to fix. However, there is a point of diminishing returns. Eventually, it needs to be put out there and live with the final product.
Anyways, better to put out something you are proud of than kick yourself for not taking the needed time to make it something you are proud of.

I hear you and I appreciate the use of the word "tinkering". You've got to ask yourself the question, "will the next round of changes make the story any better?"

At some point you have to make the decision that you are either willing to let people see what you've written or not. It's a scary thing to do. I know, I've been there. I'm always asking myself if a story is good enough. Will people like it? At the end of the day, some will like it and some won't. Life will go on and I will keep writing, hopefully turning out better quality stuff each time.

The other thing about that is this: if you put a story out for critique or review or simply for people to read and problems are pointed out, then you can always take another kick at it. If readers like it, leave it alone.

Just my two cents.

Hey Michell,
Just wanted to encourage you that you are absolutely doing the right thing. You'll learn more putting forth the effort to get it right, and then your future projects will have that knowledge to build off of and hopefully it will get easier and faster to put out quality products. Your fan base greatly appreciates your dedication to quality, so keep up the hard work, and enjoy the ride.

That's all very well Michell, but I find it impossible to know when my work is finished. I have been tinkering with some of my short stories for 15 years!

I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying the podcast and the site. I'm finally going to be releasing my first book this month if everything falls into place and the stars align (fingers crossed).

Promoting yourself can be pretty tricky. Unless you are one of those people who loves themselves and can't stand talking about anyone but them, it comes with difficulty. I'm one of those people who prefers to cheer for others over me so it was a challenge when I started too. I still think I'm overly subtle, but that's really the only way I can do the self-promotion and feel good about it. Maybe that will change and maybe it won't.

When I first started, I did it in a bit of a sneaky way. If I met someone new and they asked me about myself, I would lead with the fact that I'm a writer. Since almost everyone I've ever met has dreamed of writing a book at one time or another, it was a great way to get the conversation going. I still use that tactic to this day (successfully, I think). I also try really hard not to shill myself. That is a hard line to toe.

The bio is interesting. I tend to be fairly self-effacing so when it came to writing the bio, I outlined the information that I thought was important to share and then wrote it in a fun, maybe even goofy way. That has found its way into my Twitter profile too. Bio's don't have to be formal or serious. In fact, some of the ones I've had the most difficulty with were both of those things.

Michell, I know what you mean about stepping out of your confort zone! I an so nervous about beginning to "promote" myself that I sometimes get a little overwhelmed. So far, in creating my website, I have found it very difficult to write my bio. Maybe I can find the strength! :)

BTW....I love you podcast and reading your posts! Good luck with all of your writing endeavors and I look forward to reading! (and listening!)
