I also wanted to briefly talk about a couple of new projects I’m working on that you may or may not be aware of. The first, of these is the Mad Scientist Handbook that you have likely heard a promo for on previous episodes of the show. The Handbook is what I’m calling a pseudo-anthology. It is going to be a tongue-in handbook for the wannabe Super-villain. Picture Dr. Evil as a boy and what he would read as he tries to take over the world. Submissions are now open and you can find more information at madscientistanthology.wordpress.com. The second project that is scheduled to kick off on February 29th is the Action Pack Podcast. I am working on this project with Scott Roche, AKA spiritualtramp on Twitter, and my writing partner, JRMurdock who you will hear later in the show. We’re all pretty excited about this one. In this monthly podcast we will each be writing a serialized story. That’s three distinct stories, a portion of which you will hear each and every month until they are done. All three stories will be in every episode. We will also be putting them out in an e-Book pulp version each month through Flying Island Press. For my story, I will finally be writing Boy Scouts of the Apocalypse. We have music and artwork all lined up and I know it’s going to be awesome. When I first talked to Robin I knew she had a wealth of experience and knowledge to share. It wasn’t until I chatted with her via IM that I learned of her interest in self-publishing. As I said, I had planned on interviewing her about the topic of self-publishing and how it has changed for episode 50. She's still academically active and enjoys writing and kickboxing when not in the lab. She talks about her books, how she fits her writing into a life that includes a full-time job and how she goes about promoting her books. I’m more of a novel reader and while I enjoy vampire fiction the recent trends in that genre haven’t really struck a chord with me. - Still, Evolve is a different kind of book for me; I usually don’t read either anthologies or vampire fiction. I’m more of a novel reader and while I enjoy vampire fiction the recent trends in that genre haven’t really struck a chord with me. Still, I think I was fated to read this book. When I first opened it to a random page, the story was taking place in Calgary where I live. That doesn’t happen every day so I picked up the book. I read it cover to cover over the course of a week during my daily commute. Evolve has a nice assortment of 24 short stories from a wide-range of authors including Kelly Armstrong and Tanya Huff as well as many others. You might even run across a character or two you already know. The vampires in the anthology are not the sparkly kind, in case you are wondering, but instead pay a much closer homage to Dracula with a few modern twists. The stories feel both familiar and, at the same time, new. The anthology was a thoroughly enjoyable read. It contains mystery, fantasy, intrigue and, of course, horror. Naturally, vampires are central to every piece. Correction: Evolve was released in Canada in April 2010, will be released in the US in August 2010 and is available on Amazon.ca for $12.24 Canadian. A Warrior’s Tale tells the story of Nayla Treeborn, a half-elf, half-human warrior and her struggles to live in a world that is intolerant of a half-breed. The novel, while the third in the series, is actually a prequel to the first book. It starts and ends at essentially the same point with the meat of the novel consisting of one long flashback. It sounds odd, but it works after the first jolt into the past. The author avoids the bouncing back and forth by writing one continuous flashback at the very start of the story when the protagonist begins to relive the past. Everything else flows back to that very moment of introspection. This story is unique in a number of ways. While it is a fantasy novel complete with elves, wizards and dragons, it isn’t your parent’s fantasy story. It feels more like a cross between a fantasy novel and a ninja adventure. The novel is chock full of battles and combat and Ms. Suzuki brings her own martial arts training and knowledge to the page with great effect. There is a caste of warriors who spend their entire lives training called the Kagai warriors who are masters of war. In fact, they are the dominant warriors in this realm, not the elves as is typical in many stories. The heroine, Nayla is not the big, brash, busty warrior Amazon in a chain mail bikini. She is a diminutive woman bearing the emotional and physical scars of her father’s abuse. As a half-elf, she is shunned by elf and human alike and ultimately, she is forced to flee her father to survive. She is left in the protection of the Kagai warriors where she finds a home and trains to become one of them. This is an aspect of the hero that I particularly enjoyed. She is not perfect. In fact, she is badly flawed and prone to over-reacting. Too often the hero is some one-dimensional cutout that is too good to be true. Nayla feels much more real. The characterization is deep throughout and there were many moments when I found myself shaking my head at a character’s actions simply because they are written as real people with all the faults and shortcomings we all have. I have one minor complaint with the story and that is the language. It is extremely precise, almost stilted. I suspect this is to give the world a more formal flavor, but it did make for a more challenging read. Still, the story was very enjoyable. A couple things As many of you know, the auction for "The Boom Effect" took place on February 27, 2010 to raise money for a trust fund for Tee Morris' daughter, Sonic Boom. The auction was a HUGE success taking in over $8,000 and I'm very pleased that "GalaxyBillies" was part of that. Our winning bidder for the character spot should show up in the next episode; I've got an idea that I think will really be awesome that I'm working on right now. I'm not going to reveal who the winning bidder is (yet), but I think he'll be great. This does pose a minor problem, however. It may mean a 3-week delay before the next episode of "GalaxyBillies". I beg your patience while I put this together. I also posed the question: "Do you, my listeners, want to be called anything?" For example, Christiana Ellis had "Casey's Cadets" for "Space Casey". Let me begin with a story. It is a story of hard work and commitment and ultimately, stupid mistakes. - As you probably know, I had a hard lesson re-enforced this week and the re-enforcement made me feel like a bit of a clod. Let me begin with a story. It is a story of hard work and commitment and ultimately, stupid mistakes. As you probably know, I have a podcast titled "Get Published". When I first conceived the podcast I was only going to do an episode a month. That lasted until I put out a general call asking for interview subjects. The response was positive, VERY POSITIVE, and made me realize that I needed to increase the release schedule if I didn't want to keep people waiting for months to hear their interview. So I started releasing the podcast every two weeks. Sunday was a release day so I got up early and began doing the final editing and mixing of the podcast. As I was working on it, I decided to try some new techniques which, I hoped, would make the episode better. Seven (yes, 7) hours later I had the finished product ready to post into the feed. I had listened to the podcast several times over the course of the day so I felt confident that I was safe to upload it to my website. I started the upload and typed up the show notes. When everything was done, I posted the episode. Here is where the stupid mistake comes in. In every past episode I have taken the step of listening to the uploaded podcast. For whatever reason(s) I did not do that this time. I even remember saying to my wife "The Episode is done but I didn't review it." Her response "You know something will go wrong, don't you?" Prophetic words, indeed. I discovered when I listened to it at work the next day that I had a 1:01 minute long space of blank air. I also found that one of the promos was wrong and I heard that one of the recording techniques was less successful than I thought. Triple whammy and I couldn't do anything about it because work's firewall prevents me from getting into my website to fix the problem. Gee, do you think I should have reviewed the episode one last time? It wasn't until I got home (much later than usual do to a previous commitment) that I was able to fix the problem. And the stupid thing about it? I actually had a final mix that was correct. I loaded the wrong one. GAH! Has the lesson been absorbed? I certainly hope so! I will always do a final check before I release an episode from this moment on <crosses heart>. I will also do a final check before I submit any work of any kind (HA! You thought this only applied to podcasting, didn't you?). That means, before I send a publisher or agent query, I'm going to reread my submission to ensure that format, spelling, address and name/title of recipient are all correct (along with any other ancilliary information too). Maybe then I won't have times where I look like a complete idiot. Personal Update Not a lot to report on. I was making good progress on the book edit until Sunday when the podcast ate my day. I've also had commitments all this week that are keeping me out of the house and away from my computer. On a different note, I am trying out Scrivener (http://www.literatureandlatte.com/) for my edit to see if it is a tool that will help me out. So far I'm liking it. I decided that maybe it was high time I put a piece of my fiction up. The story is one that I wrote about 10 years ago. It was originally done to "study" the world I was creating for my first novel. I wanted to get an understanding of how the culture worked, gods and so on. It seemed pretty good when I finished it and I ultimately sent it out to a magazine. Thus it became my first rejection.
