Happy New Year!

As you know, I’ve been working on a novel with JRMurdock. Our work together is my first time collaborating with another auther and it has been a real learning experience. Both JR and I have had questions about collaborating from various people so we thought it would be helpful if we talk about our experiences. You will hear more in the main section of the show.

I’ve also been looking at my to-do list for 2012. It’s a pretty long one and I will be challenged to complete it. In the tips and typos section, I will be talking about the various projects and how I plan to complete them all.

This episode marks the third anniversary for “Get Published”. I’ve had a great deal of fun doing the show and hope to for the foreseeable future but I also want to be considerate of your needs. If there are any topics you would like to hear more about, please drop me a line to let me know.

I enjoyed this episode on collaboration. One thing that you did not talk about was compatibility. Collaboration usually requires both sides giving up some control of the editing process, and some otherwise great writers might be stressful to work with for this reason. I think it helps if both writers are close in skill and motivation to produce, and if they have a lot of respect for each other.

You make a very good point that we should have talked to. Part of why I overlooked that aspect is, JR and I knew each other for quite a while before we ever agreed to work together. We knew each other pretty well and respected each other’s work. In our early talks we both brought up the things that might impact the project and knew where the roadblock might come from. That definitely helped and, when things did come up, we let the other know.

There has definitely been give and take during the project including editorially. However, we have both taken a hand in the editing and when we disagree, we meet to discuss.

I think the absolute key here is keeping the channels of communication open.
