I want to start with a small press too because then I'll have to develop and learn to flex my marketing and promotional muscles. I'd like to get involved in a couple anthologies, but I'm not quite to the point where I want to publish my own. I need a few (several?) more polished short stories first. I’m completely with you. Well I'm writing more the last few weeks and I'm finally thinking of ways to make money. For me maybe that looks like self publishing some shorts and anthologies? I'm not so sure submitting shorts to traditional venues gets me what I want $$$-wise. The paying markets I've found don't pay much. And most of those seem to have truly MASSIVE slush piles. For my longer stuff I think small publishers is the way to go for a start. Once I edit Archangel, now that it's done, I'll start shopping to those and to agents. Where am I at?
