On today’s show I have Ian Shaw who is the publisher for Deux Voiliers Publishing. I met Ian through Nicole Chardenet. Or did I meet Nicole through Ian? Sometimes the introductions get a little muddies. Either way, I met them both and we had a great discussion.

I also talk about deadlines. How I handle them and some of the tools I use to keep them tracked and under control.

That’s today’s episode. I hope you enjoy it.

System Failure

Posted by: Michell    in Irreverent Muse

For those of you who have been reading my blog for a while, you know I pride myself on never missing a post.

That seems to have fallen by the wayside in the previous few months as I have missed my self-imposed Wednesday posting more than once (this week included). But, why is this happening?

Well, unfortunately, it isn’t just one thing. I like to think I can recover from one issue or another, but when there are multiple ones…let’s just say recovery is more difficult.

For example, the day job is challenging. I won’t say more than that, but I am leaving at the end of the day mentally and emotionally drained. I’m pretty sure I’m not unique in that, so I will just put that as one of the many things that are going on.

The second is, the sheer number of writing and podcasting projects I currently have on the go. I know I’ve given you a list before, so I won’t waste your time with it again. Suffice it to say, there are a bunch, all of which need my time and creative energy.

Scouts have started again. That requires at least one night per week. A night I didn’t really have to give up. Still, it is important so I make the sacrifice.

Life. To quote a famous android: “Life. Don’t talk to me about life.”

That’s the whole sad story. All those things have put me a little behind. Apologies for the late (and not terribly useful) post.

I CAN end it on a positive note, however. The YA Steampunk collaboration I’m doing with JR Murdock is finally past beta revisions. That means we are looking for Beta readers. If you are interested in helping JR and I out, please drop me a line.

Have a good week!

I’ve been thinking a lot lately, about how my own experiences have affected my writing. I have looked at several of my better stories and I have been able to pick out things I’ve learned, people I have known and even different events in my life.

That is not to say I’ve recorded those things in the stories, but used the experiences to provide flavour to the writing. Definitely not word for word, but more in how they would cause my characters to act and the story to develop.

So, I decided it would be fun to have a few people join me to discuss this. As often happens, I was only able to line up the schedule with a couple people, specifically Jeff Hite and JR Murdoch. We met via Google Hangout and just talked about how experiences have affected our own writing.

This is the first time I’ve used Google Hangout in this way, so, the audio is not quite as crisp as I would like. Still the discussion is good so I hope you enjoy that portion of the show.

I’ve also read and reviewed John Campbell’s book, Dreadnaught, which is part of his new “The Lost Fleet, Beyond the Frontier” series. You will hear that review today.

That’s today’s episode. I hope you enjoy it.
